Forex Definitions: The Industry’s Most Important Terms Explained

The forex industry is made up of so many definitions that it's easy to forget a few along the way. Do you know your Loonie from your Loti? Can you tell your Shooting Star from your Evening Star? Take the time to get to grips with forex jargon because understanding forex vocabulary is an important step in a trader’s journey.

Since no forex education can be complete without a glossary of basic forex terms, we've compiled one which explains key words and phrases in the simplest way possible. This way, you'll never be lost or confused with forex terminology!

Namibia Dollar.  The currency of Namibia.  It is subdivided into 100 cents.

A large stock exchange in New York.
A stock market index of all shares traded on Nasdaq.  It is weighted index according to the stocks’ capitalization.

Monthly report of New Home Sales of new single-family houses.  Released by the U.S. Census Bureau and the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

High impact, monthly report presenting the change of US employed people, excluding the farming and the government sector. Released, usually, the first Friday of the month by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Naira. The currency of Nigeria.  It is subdivided into 100 kobo.

A stock market index for the Tokyo Stock Exchange, composed of 225 stocks of large Japanese companies.
Cordoba Oro.  The currency of Nicaragua.  It is subdivided into 100 centavos.
When traders have direct access to the interbank market and there is no dealing desk involved in their transactions.
Random price movement.
Norwegian Krone.  The currency of Norway and Bouvet Island.  It is subdivided into 100 ore.
Also known as face value or par value. It is the price shown on the face of a financial instrument.
In time cycles analysis, the Nominality principle states that there exists a nominal set of harmonically related cycles that affect all markets.
A reversal pattern. During the course of an uptrend as defined by successively higher tops and higher bottoms, the last bottom is violated thus prices fall below the last bottom signaling a reversal to the downside. This is a non-failure swing to go short. On the other hand, in the course of a downtrend, as defined by successively lower tops and lower bottoms, the last top is breached thus prices rally above the last top signaling a reversal to the upside.  This is a non-failure swing to go long.
The number of contracts multiplied by the market price of the underlying financial instrument.
Nepalese Rupee.  The currency of Nepal.  It is subdivided into paisa.
One of the largest stock exchanges in the world. Located in New York.
New Zealand Dollar.  The currency of New Zealand, the Cook Islands, Niue, Pitcairn and Tokelau.  It is subdivided into 100 cents.
